Southern Pacific #2252 Fire Train

The Southern Pacific #2252 Fire Train was built by Cooke in 1897 and modified for fire train duty in 1929.

It was fitted with a Duplex pump capable of delivering 300 gallons of water per minute through a 1000-foot hose that was carried aboard the locomotive. The pump was fed from two or three water cars coupled to the train, each of which held over 7,000 gallons of water. The trains carried axes, ladders, and other firefighting equipment. The engine was equipped with a steam-driven siren that was blown when the train was in service. It was stationed at the ready at Norden during fire season.

A fire train stationed similar to this one was stationed in Colfax and provided assistance to the town during the fire that threatened the downtown businesses in 1930.
