Colfax at night, in the 1950s

These beautiful photos of downtown Colfax, California, at night were taken in the 1950s by L. R. Farrell, Grass Valley, California. They are from a collection of the Colfax Area Historical Society.

This was taken on South Main St, looking north. On the left side of the photo are the Colfax Theatre, Harry’s Market, Marson’s Mens Store, and Frigidaire Appliances. At the top of North Main St is the Stagi Bakery on Depot Street. 1999-28-7A. Photo by L. R. Farrell, Grass Valley, California.
North Main St, Colfax, California. The photo is undated, but based on the cars in the photo, the year might be in the late 1950s. 1999-36-6. The photographer is looking south on North Main St. The building on the right, closest to the photographer, was the Stagi Bakery building. Around the corner to the right of the Stagi Bakery, but not seen in this photo, is Depot Street. On the right side of the photo, starting at the far end of the street are the Purity Store, Past Time Club, Odd Fellows building, Masonic Lodge and Bank of America, Colfax Pharmacy, and George’s Club. The Freight Depot is on the left side of the photo. Photo by L. R. Farrell, Grass Valley, California.
This photo is similar to the second photo, but used a shorter exposure. See the description of the second photo for details about the buildings and businesses. 1999-38-7. Photo by L. R. Farrell, Grass Valley, California.
